eSUB Podcast Episode #24 Recap

Episode #24 features Karalynn who is a practicing construction attorney and founder of the Subcontractor Institute, which is an online education platform that provides training materials about contracts for Trade Contractors.

 The Meaning of #PowerToTheTrades

We discussed his thoughts about the many meanings of the word power in regards to the construction industry and specifically to Craft Workers and Trade Contractors.

What does “Power to the Trades” mean to her?  Karalynn said “”I think to me it means the trades have power. They just don’t realize how much. And I’m trying to educate them on where to find that out whether it’s through negotiating a subcontract or knowing your Lein rights.  Because we’re going beyond who you have a contract with to the actual owner letting know that you haven’t been paid but you have to do it, right?”

How has technology has powered the operations of Contractors you have worked with?

We discussed the impact of technology on Trade Contractors for improving communications. Karalynn explained that in the past when she and her team have spent hours looking for paper documents in “banker’s boxes.” This can become and expensive exercise for many Trade Contractors who are paying their legal team to look for the literal needle in the haystack! Unfortunately, any attorneys are not familiar with construction documents, so they spend a lot time reviewing the paper documents to be thorough for their clients. Therefore using new apps and cloud based software can be so beneficial to Trade Contractors when they need to find the documents that help to back up their claims.

Karalynn said  “pointing to me into that daily report to help backup, your side of the story is price list as opposed to me like scratching my head.”

Wrap up

This was another excellent discussion about the use case of technology in the construction industry, and how we can improve moving forward this year!

To all the trade contractors out there reading or listening, keep up your incredible work, and thank you for building and servicing the world we live in!

Let’s continue to bring #PowerToTheTrades!
