History was made this month when construction began on the Grand Sky Development Park in Grand Forks, ND, the nation’s first UAS aviation park. This $25 million redevelopment of an out-of-use portion of the Grand Forks Air Force Base, will boast a 217-acre unmanned aerial systems (UAS) park.
The vision for this project was an accidental discovery. Thomas Swoyer, Jr., was hired to find a way for the community to capitalize on this property which was picked up in a 50-year lease by the county. Shortly thereafter, companies in the UAS industry were knocking on his door and Swoyer realized the site’s potential as an unmanned-aircraft aviation center.
Although development is underway on portions of the project, there are still many opportunities for subcontractors to bid on work. Subcontractors interested in bidding on this project are encouraged to consider utilizing cloud-based project management software as a tool to track field activities via iPads, phones or other tablets. Streamlining communication between the field and office through the use of mobile devices and cloud-based project management has proven to increase efficiencies and optimize profits on large construction projects.
